John Colter Run 2026

The race.

The John Colter Run, held September 19, 2026, starting at 9:00 a.m., is a 7.5-mile race beginning and ending at Missouri Headwaters State Park, located one mile south of Trident and six miles northeast of Three Forks, Montana. The course combines 1.5 miles of paved and gravel country road with approximately 5.5 miles of trail terrain, including two railroad crossings and water crossings featuring mud and the Gallatin River. Finishers receive race shirts, and awards are given to overall male and female winners, age group champions, and oldest and youngest participants; the first 50 runners to reach the beaver dam checkpoint earn special prizes. Post-race refreshments and a barbecue with live music follow the race. Registration opens April 1, 2026, with a 300-participant limit. Race proceeds exceeding costs are donated to Headwaters State Park.
