The race.

The South Fork Alder Ass Race takes place on September 5, 2026, in South Fork, Colorado. Participants compete in pack burro racing, running alongside a burro carrying traditional prospector gear including a gold pan, pick, and shovel. Four distance options are available: 3 miles, 8.5 miles, 11 miles, and 20.25 miles. Runners must secure an officially assigned burro before registration; burro rentals are a separate fee and require prior matching based on pace and experience. Each team consists of one runner and one burro that must start and finish together. Ghost runners may participate without a burro.
